This web interface allows users to explore estimates of Water Use from 1985 to 2015
determined for the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer Study (MERAS) as part of a USGS assessment of groundwater
availability. The estimates of Water Use from 1985 to 2015 have been
aggregated for each of the counties within the study area. Only the Water Use values
for fresh water are displayed. The contribution of saline has not
been used in these estimates.
These estimates were retrieved from the National Water Information
System (NWIS) of the U.S. Geological Survey. The U.S. Geological Survey's
(USGS) National Water Information System (NWIS) is a comprehensive
and distributed application that supports the acquisition,
processing, and long-term storage of water data. More Information can
be obtained from the following link USGS Water Use Data for the Nation.
The values for the categories Public Supply, Domestic, and Livestock
were taken directly from the values obtained from NWIS. The values
for the categories Business and Agriculture were summed from others.
The estimates for the
Business category resulted from the following contributions:
Commercial, Industrial, Total Thermoelectric Power, and Mining. The
estimates for the Agriculture category resulted from the following
contributions: Aquaculture and Irrigation. The estimates for Total self-supplied
groundwater and surface-water withdrawals resulted by combining all
other contributions for groundwater and surface-water respectively.
